Bulgin Components are one of Farnell InOne's longest standing and valued suppliers with a justified reputation for the design and manufacture of high quality products.

Polysnap mains interface modules with circuit breakers
A range of re-settable mains inlet modules. EN60320 type connectors have become a standard mains interface for many products from white and brown goods through to industrial, medical and business equipment. This connector type has been available for some time as a module combining the input/output connector with fuseholders, switches and indicators. These Polysnap modules offer greatly reduced ‘real estate’ and reduced assembly time as only a single panel cut-out is needed and only one component is assembled into this cut-out. The latest Polysnap is now available with miniature circuit breakers. The MCB provides both circuit protection, switching and, if required, neon illumination. The other benefit of this method of circuit protection is an easy re-set eliminating the need to call out service engineers to change fuses. The thermally operated circuit breakers have UL & CSA approvals offering reliable circuit protection that is commercially attractive. Two major connector options are available; Standard C14 type inlets, rated at 10A, 250V, or the higher power C20 type inlets, rated at 16A, 250V, both are offered with single pole circuit breakers, red illumination using 250V neons or non-illuminated. The circuit breakers are available with the following current ratings: 5A, 10A & 16A for the C20 connector versions and 5A, 8A & 10A for the C14 versions.

Ethernet Buccaneer for Industrial Networks
Ethernet Buccaneer is an environmentally sealed circular connector family offering protection to IP68. It is a fully shielded (F-STP) system performing to Cat5e levels using the proven RJ45 connector as the basis of the connection technology. This is combined with the Buccaneer characteristics to offer a secure, reliable and practical solution in the Industrial environment.

The RJ45 connector, together with twisted pair cabling, has become standard for local area networks in office and business environments. This well-known combination has become the standard for Ethernet networks, but it's this very familiarity that can lead to problems when used in Industrial situations. The standard RJ45 connector and its associated cabling are often too delicate and do not provide enough protection against the requirements imposed by harsher Industrial applications.

There are some major differences between the ‘benign’ office environment and the rigours and requirements of the Industrial environment, these can be categorised as:

  • Dust and Water
  • EMC
  • Oils/minerals
  • Vibration
  • Handling

Bulgin's Ethernet Buccaneer design addresses these differences as follows;

Dust & Water – Dust is not generally recognised as a problem, but in practice contamination of the contact pins can have a serious corrosive effect resulting in signal degradation or eventual failure. Water or moisture is more obvious in terms of system performance or integrity. This not only makes a sealed connector system essential, but also has implications for the cable jacket and it's resistance to long term immersion. BS EN60529 defines the degree of environmental protection, and sets out the IP rating system. Ethernet Buccaneer offers IP68 protection; dustproof and waterproof, with a submersion test at a depth in excess of 2 metres - more than enough for most Industrial or external applications.

EMC – noise (R.F.I.) from external sources can effect data transmission, especially in electrically noisy environments such as the shop floor. A well shielded, braided cable will reduce interference susceptibility as will complete screening of the connector system. Ethernet Buccaneer utilises cable with an overall foil screen plus an overall braid (S-FTP) with shielded RJ45 connectors to maintain continuity of the screen through the entire Patchcord and through into the equipment with a fully shielded coupler. These measures will maintain the Faraday cage effect along the signal path, reducing EMI to a minimum.

Oils and Minerals – it is important to ensure that both the cable and the connector are resistant to any oils, etc likely to be found in the system's operating environment. The Ethernet Buccaneer housing is moulded in a tough UL94V-0 rated Polyester to give a high immunity to most commonly found oils, minerals and chemicals. Polyethylene (PE) jacket cable provides good levels of resistance to water, oils and chemicals and will not crack with long exposure to water or UV.

Vibration – the Ethernet Buccaneer uses a screw coupling to ensure that connectors are mated properly and securely. The cable retention at the rear of the re-wireable connector must provide sufficient security to hold the cable securely, to resist pulling, but without too great a pressure as this could compress the cable, potentially degrading the data transmission and so system performance. This can often be overlooked when using re-wireable connectors and over-tightening the clamping mechanism to achieve a cable seal. The Ethernet Buccaneer has a cable gland and gland nut that are tuned and tested to work specifically with the designated cable constructions.

Handling – this is probably one of the most overlooked areas. Both the cable and the connector can suffer from the rigours of mis-use in an Industrial situation. Ethernet Buccaneer considers this aspect critical for longer operational life.

The cable is an obvious consideration and UV/ozone resistance, abrasion resistance and prolonged exposure to water can only be resolved with quality cable constructions. For this reason Ethernet Buccaneer uses PE jacket cables to offer performance balanced with commercial considerations.

Perhaps the most important factor under this heading is that of mechanical handling; the rough treatment that the delicate RJ45 could see during mating or ‘blind mating’ or even by being dropped on concrete floors. Ethernet Buccaneer has a shroud that protects the RJ45 from this potential damage and provides positive alignment during mating, guiding the two connectors together and eliminating ‘mis-mating’.

The Ethernet Buccaneer range includes:

  • Field re-wireable connector, PX0834/B, complete with shielded RJ45
  • Panel mounted connector, PX0833, housing a Cat5e shielded coupler, this provides a sealed Buccaneer connection to the front of the panel and a standard RJ45 to the rear. Single hole fixing makes it easy to fit and the panel cut-out is compatible with all existing Standard Buccaneer chassis connectors. This is supplied complete with panel gasket.
  • Standard length patch-cords in 2, 3 and 5 metre lengths. These are available in double ended, Ethernet Buccaneer to Ethernet Buccaneer (PX0832), or single ended, Ethernet Buccaneer to standard RJ45 (PX0831).
  • A new sealing cap PX0835 is required for the flex connectors to maintain IP rating when not mated. The chassis connector uses the standard PX0733 sealing cap.
  • This Ethernet Buccaneer range has been complemented by the addition of a unique in-line connection. Designed as a low cost cable joiner using industry standard couplers protected by the proven Buccaneer cable joiner housing (PX0777). Available supplied complete with shielded (STP) and un-shielded (UTP) couplers or a high performance shielded (STP) coupler rated to CAT5e levels. The in-line LAN coupler is designed for use with all standard RJ45 connectors.
